Description

My first upload!

Back when i studied Industrial & Transportation Design, Ellipse Guides were a rare and expensive treat. I love using them in handmade design or comic sketches in order to create crisp perspective drawings of (concentric) elliptical parts like buttons, rims, hinges, etc.

Doing this on a lasercutter with flexible plastic would be the best way to do it, but here we are!

Ellipse Sketch Guides mk1 (20250220)

The three included ellipse angles of 22, 38 and 55 degress (representing the 2D projection of the circular caps of a cylinder rotated ortographically at the respective angle) were chosen rather randomly, or as they say, based on vibes. I will likely extend the range in the future.

UPDATE  20251024  -  I added an extended range of three angles - you  can find them here.

PLEASE READ:

  1. The included print profile is my attempt at optimizing for speed and material efficiency. In my experience some seams in the cutouts can require a bit of sanding.
  2. The guides are printed face down. During my testing i learned that using the initial layer's precision and the smoothness from the plate was the best solution to remove the need for ironing in the print or sanding afterwards.
  3. Print speed is reduced significantly to ensure better adhesion. PLEASE let the plate cool down before removing the guides! A warped guide is a major pain in the ass to draw with.
  4. After protoytping it became apparent that a solid print was not useful for drawing, therefore the included profile is set to only print the honeycomb infill - this allows you to see your existing sketch and makes aligning the guide easier. For my usage, the thickness of the guide, the amound of layers as well as the layer height in combination with the honeycomb infill are sufficiently flexible, yet sturdy.
  5. The files include solid geometry, if you want to try printing in Transparent PETG for example - i will update this project in that regard once i get my own transparent filament.

DISCLAIMER:

This set is not a precise measuring tool, i created it solely as a sketching and drawing support for creative expression. I.e., the dimensions of the ellipse cutouts are modified by a few 0.1mms to counter tolerance issues and can differ from the displayed measurements within that tolerance. This first set and print profile therefore represent the best tolerance i could achieve with my A1 mini, my abilities and my understanding of the FDM Printing as well as the Bambu Slicer.
