Notes on filament
I've printed these eggs successfully in Bambu PLA Basic, Elegoo PLA Basic and ZIRO glitter PLA. The eggs in most of the pictures were printed in this PLA for 3D pen, which as you can see is possible, though I certainly wouldn't recommend it as it is not very easy to work with. There are better options if you want smaller amounts of lots of different colors, such as sample packs from Paramount 3D or what I expect is printer-grade filament from Polymaker, sold as 3D pen filament. (Careful, though — 10 feet = only about 10 grams of filament!)
If you insist on trying the 3D pen filament, here are the settings I use. Start with the generic PLA presets and adjust:
- Flow ratio: 0.95
- Recommended nozzle temp: 180-210
- Nozzle temp: 190 (all layers)
- Plate temp: 55 (all layers)
Slowing down to 50% speed (silent mode), especially for initial layers and any tricky parts of the print (the bottom and top ~10 mm of the print, in this case), is really helpful, and so is ensuring that your build plate is completely clean.
Final thoughts
If you print this, please let me know what filament you use and how it goes! I've been working on this design for weeks, and I'd love to know if there are any additional improvements I can make.
Speaking of which, if this model looks familiar, you might have seen a similar design I posted a few weeks ago. I think the response showed that it was the right idea, but the execution wasn't quite there yet. That's why I redesigned this from scratch, tweaking every element until it just worked. I hope it works perfectly for you, too!
Wow, thanks for reading all the way to the end. Impressive! If any of this has been interesting or useful, please hit like, collect, download or boost. It really, truly makes it possible to spend enormous amounts of time and filament trying to bring cool ideas like this one to life. THANK YOU.
