The Fidget Kit Mini V1
To see a larger version of the fidget kit, please look at my collection.
Please read carefully before you print this project.
I’m fascinated with various types of hardware, and it just made sense to make a small fidget kit that would allow me to fidget in infinite ways with threaded objects. Needless to say, this fidget isn’t a one and done. This kit is broken down into 3 different plates but can be printed on one plate on a larger printer.
I strongly suggest the following:
- print only one threaded rod or thumb screw and the four-sided spinner to check your printer’s tolerances before printing the whole plate.
- Use the same filament to print all of the parts. Different filaments have different amounts of shrink and parts may not interact well. If you must do different colors, stick with the same brand and type – i.e Esun PLA+ non-matte. I got away with mixing yellow and black with no issues.
- Don’t use matte filament. Silks may or may not work. I have not tried.
- If you are printing on an A1 or A1 mini (or any bed slinger), slow it down. The taller threaded rods are delicately attached. I don’t like brims as they mess with the threads when they don’t come off clean so either slow way down or use a brim for the slingers. If you do use a brim, you'll need to carefully trim the thread starting point at the tip of the screw.
Plate 1 contains the base set with a tighter tolerance between the various threaded objects. It includes a thumbscrew with screw-on end caps, four threaded rods, two assembly cubes, and various threaded objects. Threaded rods are 50, 40, 30, and 20MM so you can print only what you want or print all for more variety. Note you must have your printer and filament dialed in to use the tighter tolerance but it feels more “precision”. If your filament calibration is off, the tighter tolerance may not operate smoothly. Print a test FIRST.
Plate 2 contains the base set with a slightly looser tolerance between the various threaded objects. It includes a thumbscrew with screw-on end caps, four threaded rods, two assembly cubes, and various threaded objects. Threaded rods are 50, 50, 30, and 20MM so you can print only what you want or print all for more variety. If your printer isn’t as precise, choose this one. Print a test FIRST.
Plate 3 contains a 65x45x35mm Fidget Kit Box to contain your toys. It is a slip-on cover rather than hinged for simplicity sake. I’ll design a new box in v2 that uses something that goes with the theme. It is big enough to hold the full set plus 2 or 3 more pieces depending on what additional you print. If you print a bunch of extras, either scale the box up a bit or print a second one. If you want to print a BUNCH of extra parts you can print the regular sized fidget kit box which is quite a bit larger. It'll fit 3-4 full sets of mini parts.
I have successfully printed this in Esun PLA+ black and yellow as well as ELEG00 PLA silver (not silk). I have successfully printed quite a few sets at .2MM layer height with both 2 and 3 walls. I tend to run infill rate at 40%+ because I like the denser feel and the more mass, the more they will spin.
Last, but not least, if you have any suggestions for additions to the kit, please don’t hesitate to reach out or leave a comment and I’ll add it to the base kit. I’m 100% certain there will be a V2. 😊
