Open Source Starlight Series Mini Laser Engraver - Starlight 4PRO

Note: It is not compatible with the Starlight 4 model. The front and rear gantry and X-axis motor mounts are different, but other printed parts are universal. The circuit board is not universal. Upgrades include: using a Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) board to connect the motor, adding a cooling fan, and optimizing some detailed structures. This version was also designed previously and does not include Wi-Fi or Bluetooth functions, remaining a low-cost solution with little cost difference from Starlight 2 and Starlight 4

The model printing files are open source. In addition to the 3D printed model, all related open-source materials are available on the Lichee open-source hardware platform. Model printing parameters: It is recommended to use a layer height below 0.15mm, slow down the printing speed. Common materials like PETG and PLA can be used. I usually use PETG for printing because of its better toughness. Other parts can be printed according to usual habits (0.2mm layer, 3 walls, 15% infill, 3 top and bottom layers). Only the bracket and base that hold the laser head require supports; other printed parts do not need supports

The holes in the slider for the optical axis need to have internal burrs removed. It is recommended to ream them with a 3.05mm twist drill to ensure smoothness

Regarding the component list on the circuit board, since some components were not found in the component library, the BOM table is inaccurate. I will provide an accurate component list for everyone. 1. Prototype PCB, one order for the main board and one for the adapter small board. FR4 double layer. For other options, choose free ones

2. Arduino Nano development board ×1, ATmega328P chip. 9-12 yuan each, free shipping

3. FPC flat flexible cable: 1mm pitch - 6P, reverse, 20cm long, 1 piece

4. FPC connector: 4P-1mm, bottom flip-lock, 2 pieces; 6P-1mm, bottom flip-lock, 2 pieces

5. XH2.54 terminal block: 2P-horizontal mount, 1 piece

6. 4010 cooling fan, a 12V silent fan is fine. Washers are printed parts, included in the model. M3*16 large flat head screws 2 pieces, M3 nuts 2 pieces

7. A4988 stepper motor driver ×2, 3-3.5 yuan each, total cost 7 yuan (related electronic components can be bought from one supplier to save on shipping. Wholesale components usually have lower unit prices but no free shipping, not detailed further below)

8. N-channel switching MOSFET model IRFZ44N ×1, TO220 package, 0.4-0.5 yuan each

9. Three-terminal voltage regulator model LM7805 ×1, TO220 package, 0.3 yuan each. TO220 heatsink ×1, M3*4 screw ×1. Used in combination with the voltage regulator, total cost about 1 yuan

10. 1/4W through-hole resistors, 47Ω one, 100K one (unit price 0.01 yuan each, but usually sold as 100 for 1 yuan)

11.  XH2.54 terminal block (female header): 4P straight pin ×2, 2P straight pin ×4. These do not need to be soldered. These pads are reserved as backup pads, for fear that some people cannot solder surface-mount sockets

12. DC female jack 5.5*2.1 pure copper ×1 (a little over 0.1 yuan each)

IV. The following are other parts required to assemble the mini laser engraver

1. Laser head 5V 250mW, 12mm diameter (about 26 yuan each including shipping, on Taobao, Sanwu Electronics has 5V heads. No partnership, just for your convenience)

2. Laser safety goggles (buying one separately costs about 3 yuan, buying more makes it about 1 yuan each. Search for dark green welding glasses. Darker color is recommended for better protection. You can get free shipping for 2-3 yuan on PDD. Do not buy them with the laser head; the glasses they provide are not good)

3. Data cable (compatible with the development board's data interface. The cost of the development board is calculated into the mainboard. In fact, it's fine to buy it with the development board, about 0.5 yuan each. There are also Type-C development boards, just like phone data cables)

4. Frame set (model STL files have been uploaded. Those with a printer can print it themselves; material cost is a few yuan. Those without a printer can refer to my handmade version tutorial, or contact me to get the frame, full set of loose parts, and finished products. PS: A small way for artisans to earn profit)

5. Starlight 4PO matching screws: M3*6 three pieces, M2.5*10 four pieces, M2.5*8 ten pieces, M2*4 six pieces, no nuts needed (worth a few cents). Screws used on the mainboard are included in the mainboard cost (M3*16 two pieces, M3 nuts two pieces, M3*4 screw one piece, M3*6 can also be used, same as the initial screws)

6. Micro stepper motor ×2, 58mm long lead screw, 3.75mm pitch, 1.2 yuan each. This motor is from Shenzhen Jiesheng Motor (selling inventory, I don't know them, no partnership). He sells an original imported 15mm two-phase four-wire micro stepper motor - C type motor from NIDEC Japan, allegedly with four to five thousand in stock. The only drawback is that he does not offer free shipping, and the shipping fee is 6 yuan. Those clumsy with their hands can buy a few more for better value

7. Motor cable: This uses an FPC flexible flat cable, which is integrated into the mainboard above

8. Stainless steel optical axis 3mm diameter, 10cm long. You can buy 50 pieces for 7 yuan, but only 4 pieces are needed to assemble one machine. I prepare kits long-term so I buy in bulk; you can also look for retailers

9. Grease (butter-like substances are also fine, but I always use 3D printer grease. Perhaps other lubricants would work too; without lubrication, it's not smooth)

10. Power supply 12V 2A (about 5 yuan each). The power input port should be 5.5*2.1 or 2.5 to match the DC female port on the mainboard. Using 2A accounts for potential power mislabeling; if not mislabeled, 0.5A is sufficient

 

All materials completed. The total cost for replicating the entire set of materials is approximately 70 yuan. The software is also open source, and all information is shared free of charge, with no other paid content
