Description

Slotted Angle Iron Cable Management Adapter

This adapter was created as a solution for my own desk setup—one of the many popular IKEA desk hack builds. I didn’t like the bowing in the middle of the tabletop, especially where my monitor sits, so I added a slotted angle iron underneath for reinforcement. It’s probably a bit over-engineered, but it gives the top extra support and keeps things sturdy.

The next challenge was cable management. I wanted something clean and low-profile—ideally, something that would hide the wires without the need for bulky cable boxes or under-desk channels. Originally, I just zip-tied the cables directly to the slotted angle iron, but every time I had to move or replace a cable, it turned into a frustrating mess.

So, I set out to design something more efficient—something that would reduce (or almost eliminate) the need for zip ties altogether.

Goals for the Design:

  1. Easy to 3D print
  2. Easy to remove or reposition
  3. No more wrapping or cutting zip ties
  4. Flush with or hidden behind the slotted angle

I believe this design achieves all of those goals. While it's a niche solution, I wanted to share it in case someone else with a similar desk setup is looking to tidy up their cable management.

Design Notes:

  • The peg that slots into the slotted angle is just over 2mm thick. If your slotted angle is thicker, let me know—I can provide an updated version.
  • It’s designed to work best with standard zip tie sizes for a secure hold. Thinner zip ties will still work but may not allow the adapter to sit as flush.
  • This adapter is intended only to hold cables. It’s not designed to support heavier objects or take on structural loads.
