Description

Scan your 35mm film with this attachment on your macro lens. This assembly is entirely 3D printed and screws directly on to a 58mm front macro lens. You'll need a macro lens with a 1:1 ratio.

The film window features a two-layer diffuser that is ironed in the printing process. This allows you to use the scanner with any strong backlight, or a sunny sky, as I did with the sample scans.

Please note that this is a rudimentary scanner with film advancement performed by hand. This item might scratch your negatives.

The Film Holder Assembly is printed in two parts, with pegs to join them together. With my printer, the pegs fit over 50% of the time, but I have also had to take a 1/16" drill bit to the holes for the pegs to fit. You can optionally secure the two halves of the assembly together with Loctite or similar glue.

For best results:

  • Measure the “working distance” of your focal plane from the front of your macro lens when set to 1:1
  • Adjust the length of the film scanner to your “working distance” by twisting the Extension Tube around the Lens Mount Tube.
  • Attach the Film Holder Assembly and rotate to align with your camera's sensor.
  • For fine adjustment of the focus, hold the Film Holder Assembly steady with the focusing pin and the bottom, and twist the Extension Tube.
    • The threading on the Film Holder Assembly and at the front of the Extension Tube is reversed (counter-clockwise), this allows the twist to adjust the distance between your film and your camera's sensor without rotating the Film Holder Assembly.
