Description

A slim Photo EDC box with optional inlays designed for photography-related items.

Designed to hold a bunch of useful items which you maybe would like to have with you on a photo walk/daytrip like SD cards, a pen, a small knife, meds, zip-ties and so on.

Designed with the following features in mind:

  • Not too bulky - also fits „smaller“ camera cubes/sling bags/backpacks
  • Lightweight - less than 100g including inlays
  • Modular - box can be used with or without inlays
  • Sturdy - strong structure to protect items
  • Simple & durable closing mechanism
  • Two different lids - choose depending on usage (please see below)
  • Separate objects, so box/lid/inlays can easily be printed in different colors

Compatibility

I used the following items, also shown in the pictures:

  • Olight Open Mini 2 pen, but any pen/pencil not exceeding 105 mm in height should work
  • Victorinox Compact SD Swiss Army Knife with small cord (use “Original Inlay”)
    • (Updated) Inlay v1.1: Use this updated inlay for Victorinox Rambler compatibility
  • Spare SD card / SD card adapter
  • SmallRig Mini screwdriver (which comes with some SmallRig camera cages)
    • Is held magnetically, if you decide to use the 3x2 mm magnets for the inlays
  • Some meds
  • Spirit level for hot shoe
  • Zip ties wrapped in some fabric tape, safety pin, Peak Design (spare) anchor

Use the box without the inlays to pack whatever you like :-)

Details

Why two lids?

There are two types of lids you can choose from:

  • The lid with the diagonal braces is used with the inlays if the packed items (mainly the SD cards) need to stay exactly in place, only leaving around 0.9 mm between braces and inlays.
  • The lid without the diagonal braces leaves around 4.9 mm of space between the inlays and the lid, therefore you can pack additional flat things under the lid, like a small microfiber cloth, some sheets of paper, business cards, …

The lids are designed to have a fit more on the tight side, which I personally prefer for such applications. The snap fit of the lid will get a bit more loose over time anyhow. I also included lids with a bit more of a loose fit (0,3 mm instead of 0,25 mm on each side), on an extra print plate, as your preference might be different.

So please choose the combination you like and drag the rest off the print plate :-)

Magnetic tray

The magnetic tray is designed to use two 3x2 mm magnets. In my tests, the (press) fit was tight enough to work without glue, but your mileage may vary.

Make sure, that the polarity is right before pressing them in, as they can’t be removed without destroying the printed item.

If no magnets are at hand, the smaller inlay will also stay in place, if the lid is closed, as its handle presses against the inside of the lid :-)

If you choose to use the inlays permanently, you could of course glue the lower one into the box.

Which filaments were used?

The following filaments were used for the prints in the pictures:

  • Bambulab Matte PLA Dark Green
  • Bambulab Matte PLA Nardo Gray
  • Bambulab Matte PLA Matte Caramel
  • Bambulab Matte PLA Desert Tan

I found the “matte" look quite appealing and as the box will most likely be carried around in some bag/backpack, I didn't see the need to use PETG or alike.

Update history

Update 25.06.2025: Added “Inlay v1.1” to add Victorinox Rambler compatibility. Original (v1) Inlay also available on extra print plate to preserve nice Victorinox Classic SD fit.
