Description

Boost Me (for free)

Leave a boost if you like this model, every little bit helps and I really appreciate it, thanks!

*** I intend to keep all of my creations free, so if you'd like to help me out even further, you can Buy Me A Coffee too! ***

Ever had trouble attempting to record your RC vehicle while trying to use your controller with one hand and record with your phone in the other? This should solve your problems and help you to create much more stable videos in the process.

Designed to work with a pistol-grip style transmitter, I've created 2 different designs to allow you to stabilise your recording with 2 hands and to control your RC with either just your left hand, or with both hands (left hand throttle, right hand steering).

This should be compatible with most pistol-grip style transmitters that have the large base on them, such as the ones shown in the photos. I've tested with the Flysky GT5 and Traxxas TQ transmitters, which both work well. Below I've included some information on dimensions to check to see if your controller will work. If you're not sure then leave me a comment with some info and a photo and I'll see if I think it will work or not.

FEATURES

  • Adjustable mount for your transmitter - should suit transmitter base width of roughly 40-70mm and base height up to 30mm
  • Adjustable mount for your phone - adjustable location to avoid clashing with phone buttons & camera - fits phones of up to 85mm in width and 11mm thick (suitable for most modern day phones except folding phones)
  • Adjustable steering wheel height - place your transmitter on a flat surface and measure from the surface vertically to the centre of the steering wheel - it suits ranges from 140-180mm
  • Steering wheel clamps - suits 50mm diameter as standard - optional customisable shim can be printed in TPU to adapt to a smaller diameter wheel

MODEL VERSIONS

2-handed control

This version allows you to use the throttle with your left hand and control the steering with your right hand. Assembly and printing is slightly more complex, but it's great if you're like me and can't get used to both the throttle and steering with just one hand

2-handed control - throttle left hand, steering right hand

1-handed control

This will allow you to control both the throttle and steering with your left hand, while still providing a grip for you right hand to stabilise your recording

1-handed control - throttle and steering left hand

REQUIRED PARTS

  • Qty 9 - M3x8mm screws (only 7 required for 1-handed version)
  • Qty 2 - M3x16mm screws - to mount the right hand grip
  • Qty 2 - 6001 bearings - not required for 1-handed version (12mm ID x 28mm OD x 8mm W) - I'd recommend printing these, I used this model here: 6001 3d printed bearings

PRINTING

Printing should be pretty straight forward, I used PETG-CF and PLA for the version seen in the photos.

If your steering knob is less than 50mm diameter, then you'll need to print the shim to fit your steering knob. You can customise it to suit the diameter of your transmitters steering knob by modifying it as below

ASSEMBLY

  • mount the transmitter and phone brackets using four M3x8mm screws
  • install TPU pads and add the tightening nuts - the pads should stay put ok, but a a bit of double sided tape will prevent them being knocked loose
  • tighten the steering knob adapter on to your transmitter using an M3x8 screw
  • For 1-handed version only:
    • place transmitter on a flat surface and measure vertical height from surface to centre of steering knob
    • place the bearing holders in to the two sides of the hand grip at equal heights corresponding to the height measured - middle of the slots is 160mm, so adjust up or down from there
    • install the bearings and steering wheel and slide the rod in to hold it all in place temporarily
  • screw together the two side of the grip using M3x8mm screws
  • Install the hand grip on to the body using two M3x16mm screws
  • for 1-handed version - slide the rod in to the steering adapter and tighten it on using one M3x8mm screw - you may need to loosen the first screw on the steering adapter first
