Description
A non damaging internal Webcam case for the P1S and P1P using the internal components of a Tapo TC60 Webcam
Note. The GIF is a lower quality than the actual image you get from the Tapo camera due to GIF upload limitations on Makerworld. The still image withe the Benchy is a better representation of the quality.
As it is internally mounted, it can be a semi-permanent fixture and does not need to move to open the door or top. The mount is simply placed into a hole just behind and to the right of the poop chute, it has also been designed to clear the drive belts. The case and lens is also slim enough not to touch the print head when it is at its fullest extent back.
The TC60 is a cheap Wi-Fi webcam (As of 19th July, £15.99 on Amazon.co.uk, $15.60 on Amazon.com). You will need a free Tapo account to view the camera feed, you don't need a paid subscription to watch the video in real time as well as taking pictures and videos on your phone.
I printed the case in PETG as it will be permanently in the chamber. The model prints in an hour and takes less than 24g of filament.
Before you start - I recommend that you setup the camera, connecting it to your Wi-Fi to check that it is working correctly, and is accessible from the Tapo App.
To fit the camera in the case:
- Carefully prise the black front out from the TC60 OEM case, I found a slim plastic scraper or flat bladed screwdriver at the centre of the top and bottom edges worked best (if you want to be able to reinstate the TC60 OEM case later, be careful not to scratch it.
- There are two plastic clips holding the circuit board in place within the OEM case, use the same screwdrivers to hold them away from the circuit board while you pull it, and the attached daughterboard out from the OEM case.
- I suggest unplugging the cable that runs from the circuit board to the speaker which is glued to the inside back of the OEM case. It is a two wire cable connected to the circuit board by a white plastic plug. The camera operates perfectly well without it plugged in.
- Carefully mount the circuit board and daughterboard in the new printed case, angling the Micro SD Card slot into the slot on the left of the printed case.
- Install the lid carefully over the lens and LED.
To mount the webcam in the P1S/P1P
- Route the power cable through the poop chute (I used adhesive Zip Tie mounts and Zip Ties to keep the power cable close into the rear of the poop chute), it doesn't interfere with the poop as it goes down the chute.
- Place the mount in one of the two 12mm holes on the back shelf of the printer, aligning it so that it is parallel (I recommend the hole furthest from the poop chute - so that the camera is blocked when the toolhead homes)
- Connect the power into the top of the mount and ensure the power cable is secured and runs neatly, not touching any drive bets or other mechanisms in the printer.
- I recommend checking that the mount doesn't foul the drive belts, and the print head by manually moving the X & Y Axis
- In the Tapo App settings, you will need to invert the picture as the circuit board is upside down so that the power can come out of the top of the case.
