Description

Many build plate holders exist to choose from.  Under-AMS, standalone on the desk, mounted under desk overhangs, etc.  I wanted a build plate holder that allowed someone to stitch together and expand their build plate holder as their obsession…er…collection of build plates grows over time.

This system is a fully-parametrized model I built in Onshape (full CAD model is here).  I have various options to modify the number of slots, how feet are placed, etc.  The various holder configurations can have the attach points be on the left, right, or both sides.  This allows one to completely customize how wide to make the build plate holder.  This is also a very strong and robust model.  It's heavy enough that pulling a build plate should not move the holder.

In this upload though, I have 3 configurations that were important for my setup needs: 10-plate holders, a 5-plate holder, and various 3-plate holders.

The holders attach with dogbone connectors that are fit-pressed into the cutout on each model.  These are tight for a reason!  You may need the help of a gently-used rubber mallet to seat them.  The holders and the optional TPU feet get fastened using heat threaded inserts to push an M3 x 4mm x 4.5mm threaded insert into the pre-modeled holes, and then are fasted using a button-head M3x6mm screw.  Head cap M3 screws will not fit properly flush, so try to use a button-head if possible.

The models also should be printed using supports.  This ensures the best dimensional accuracy for the dogbone connectors.  The models are optimized to use support material for PLA/PETG.  If one does not have this material, the model filament you choose to print with can be used.  Just adjust the interface distance from 0mm to 0.2mm in the Support configuration menu in Bambu Studio.  Otherwise the support will be welded to the model!!

As I try to do with all of my models, I've included both STEP and STL files for all models in the projects.  Feel free to adjust as necessary for your own needs.  If you need/prefer the CAD model itself, DM me and I'll try to send you a link to my OnShape project for the model.

Thanks, and happy printing!
