Description

Here is my first attempt at making a circular cake box filament storage and feeder.

I'm using the BMCU rather than the official AMS.

 

Exactly the same concept as the cereal boxes, just cheaper and slightly more compact.

The idea being I can have a stack of these all ready to go - I'm aiming to make the filament swaps as easy as possible whilst keeping then in a dry storage solution.

 

The filament sits on top of a conical bearing style lazy susan (link to original design below)

The filament feeds out of a PTFE fitting.

There is a centre cylinder that keeps the spool central in the box, otherwise the cardboard spool edges can snag a little because of the friction between the spool edge and the plastic.

The central cylinder has holes in the side face and can be filled with silica gel balls.

The top of the cylinder will accept the circular hygrometer that you see everywhere.

 

I've taken bits from the following projects to arrive at my solution:

To assemble….

PTFE Fitting:

  • Line up the PTFE fitting in the desired location, mark the three holes and drill all with a 5mm bit.
  • Screw in the PTFE connector and pass some PTFE tube through it - I used about 7cm
  • Screw the two halves of the PTFE fitting together.

Main Lazy Susan

  • Turn the box upside down and place the main lazy susan part underneath - line it up centrally
  • Screw through the bottom of the box into the pilot holes in the bottom of the lazy susan - be careful not to over tighten as the screw will pull through the plastic base of the box
  • Turn it back over, fill the cylinder with silica gel balls
  • Fit the hygrometer
  • Drop the bearing part into place.

To use:

  • Feed the filament out of the PTFE tube
  • Drop the spool over the central cylinder 
  • Attach the lid
  • Good to go!

After use:

  • Attach the plug to the end of the filament to stop it going back inside the box
  • Open the lid and rewind the spool to pull in the slack filament until the plug reaches the PTFE connector.
  • Replace the lid

I recommend printing the PTFE connector and plug in the same colour as the filament being store :)

 

The downside to this design is the lack of ability to rewind the filament back onto the spool easily.

Currently I need to take the lid off to manually spin the spool - not the end of the world but it is something I want to solve - if anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them!
