Gale Crater - NASA Curiosity Rover Landing Site
Print Profile(1)

Description
Gale Crater is a massive impact crater on Mars, about 154 kilometers (96 miles) wide, and is home to Mount Sharp, a towering 5-kilometer-high (3-mile) central peak made of layered rock. Scientists believe these layers preserve a record of Mars’ environmental history, including evidence of ancient lakes and rivers. Since 2012, NASA’s Curiosity rover has been exploring Gale Crater, uncovering signs that it once had conditions suitable for microbial life, making it a key site for studying the planet’s habitability.
