CATHEDRAL OF ANTS

In this project, I have tried to reproduce a micro-environment to interact with the fascinating world of ants. 🐜

Some time ago, I came across a documentary that talked about termites and how these incredible architect insects build their nests.

Termite mounds are indestructible structures that can reach dizzying heights and resist all forces of nature, from the water of storms to the most impetuous winds.

For the 'Cathedrals' contest, I wanted to explore an aesthetic that blends the monumental and the organic. The model is a visual synthesis between imposing human architectural structures, specifically inspired by the Milan Cathedral, and the complex engineering of natural termite mounds.

The goal was to scale down this grandeur and make it functional for a more suitable and custom-made habitat for common ants.

I have created spires and towers that evoke the majestic appearance of a Gothic cathedral, while the base and walls are traversed by a series of tunnels and openings that imitate the tunnels of an anthill.

These paths guide the ants from the outside to the heart of the structure, where at the center there is a strategic space intended to house the food bait.

The ants will be naturally attracted and, by traversing the internal tunnels of the structure, will reach the center of the cathedral.

The idea was to create something that combined art, design, and biology, transforming a common insect attractant into a striking piece that allows for close observation of ants' industriousness and their social interactions.
