Luigi is Mario's twin brother and was originally designed to be a character for 2P operation. There are two theories about the origin of his name. One theory is that there was a pizza shop called "Mario&Luigi's" near Nintendo's American office, which inspired the name Luigi. Another theory is that because his characteristics are similar to Mario, and the Japanese word for similar is "ruiji," the name Luigi was chosen due to its similar pronunciation.
