Description

A simple tool to help with welding filament remnants.

Printed with PETG (0.2mm layer, no support), I do not recommend PLA, if possible use a filament with higher temperature resistance.

Designed for PTFE tubes that can be purchased on aliexpress and similar shops - OD 2.6mm, ID 1.8mm, length 37-38mm

To assemble you will need:

  • 2x M4 x 20 screw
  • 2x M4 nut (recommended with plastic insert)
  • 4x M4 washer

The right side marked with an X clamps the filament, the left side allows for the necessary pushing of the filament - if necessary, all parts can be mirrored before printing.

For the heat source I use a hot air soldering iron, but theoretically other things can be used, just to reach a sufficient temperature to melt the filament (soldering iron, lighter, wrapped heating wire, etc.).

After successful connection, wait for it to cool down a bit, just enough to roll between your fingers to separate the filament from the tube. It is not necessary to cut the tube, it can be used multiple times.

The weld area is usually thicker, about 2mm, so it needs to be trimmed. For this I designed a trimmer, it's not very precise, after trimming the thickness is about 1.8mm, but it serves the purpose.
