Mola Rotunda – Round Mill

                  An ancient Greek board game

In a small Greek village, somewhere between olive groves and the blue shadows of the Aegean, the elders once sat in the cool shade of plane trees. Before them lay a simple stone game board – round, crisscrossed by fine lines that intersected like the paths of a labyrinth. They called this game Mola Rotunda, the Round Mill – a game so old that no one knew exactly who invented it first

The children watched in fascination as their grandfathers placed small pebbles on the lines, alternately, calmly, and thoughtfully. At first, it looked like a simple pastime – but soon they realized that every move involved consideration and cunning. For whoever managed to place three stones in a row – forming a “mill” – was allowed to take one of the opponent’s stones. A silent struggle began, entirely without loud words – only the gentle clicking of stones on the stone floor revealed that a battle was being fought, one that could only be won with the mind

The elders said Mola Rotunda taught patience and foresight. Every move had its meaning, every decision a consequence – just like in life itself. Sometimes one had to sacrifice to win later; sometimes one won by letting go

As the sun slowly set behind the white houses of the village and the air smelled of salt and thyme, the game pieces glittered in the golden light. Then the players smiled, content with victory or defeat, for both were part of the game – and part of life

Thus, Mola Rotunda is still played today – in taverns, in living rooms, and in the hearts of those who know that even the simplest game can tell a profound story

Game Rules

Two players play against each other: One person has three light pieces and the other person has three dark pieces
The goal is to get a “mill”. This means three adjacent pieces of the same color that go through the center

You alternately place a piece on any field, just like in today's Mill game. If all pieces are placed and no player has gotten a mill, you alternately move one field further. You are not allowed to skip. The person who first gets a “mill” wins
