Bronze Elephant Zun
Print Profile(0)
Description
The entire vessel is shaped like an elephant, with a stout and sturdy body, a long, raised trunk, nostrils extending forward, a protruding mouth revealing tusk-like incisors; the elephant's back is flat, with an oval opening and no lid; its four limbs are strong and powerful, with five toes on each foot, a short, drooping tail, and a flange protruding where the tail joins the hip. The curled trunk is slightly S-shaped, conveying both solemnity and fluid, lively lines, a vivid representation of a real-life elephant. The elephant zun is covered with patterns, with taotie patterns and kui patterns adorning the main body, scale patterns on the trunk, and snake patterns on the forehead. All patterns are in relief, making it almost a three-dimensional sculpture. This elephant zun should be a wine
container. The oval opening on the elephant's back serves as the zun's mouth, where wine could be poured in; the nostrils are connected to the belly, serving as spouts, from which wine could flow out. The entire artifact not only presents a lifelike image of an elephant but also possesses the practical value of zun and pot-like vessels.
