Weather E-Paper Display in an IKEA RÖDALM Frame (13×18 cm)

This project transforms an IKEA RÖDALM picture frame into a minimalist and extremely power-efficient weather display. A 7.5” E-Paper panel shows current weather data as well as a preview for the next few hours or the coming day.

At the heart of the system is an ESP32 (Lolin32), powered by one to two 18650 cells. Thanks to E-Paper technology, the display remains clearly readable at all times – energy is only required when updating.

The specially designed inner housing ensures that all components sit neatly and securely within the frame. The existing metal clips of the RÖDALM frame are used to firmly install the printed insert without additional mounting materials. From the front, the display looks like a normal picture frame – with a modern, understated style.

Features

  • 7.5" E-Paper (800×480) with high contrast, perfect for weather information
  • Operation with 1 to 2 batteries (18650)
  • Very low power consumption (E-Paper + Deep-Sleep)
  • All integrated into the IKEA RÖDALM 13×18 cm frame
  • 3D-printed insert for stable, service-friendly mounting
