Customizable Star Map Ornament (Parametric)

This is a 3d-printable star map ornament that you can customize to commemorate a place and time that is special to you! Just enter the coordinates and date and time of that event and the script will output a star map that shows what the sky looked like at that time and place. Some examples: “Our first date” or the place and time of a loved ones birth or death.

Using the customizer, you can also make a coaster or a wall plaque.

Customization Guide:

Before customizing any parameters, set the wall generator mode to Arachne using the “Assemble View” menu at the top of the customizer window. This is very important for properly printing text. This can also be changed in the slicer after downloading by looking up “Wall Generator” and setting it to Arachne.

Customizable settings:

• Title Text
  • What this star map represents (eg. “Our First Date” etc.)
• Coordinates
  • The location that the star map represents.
  • On desktop: open Google Maps and right click your desired location. Click the coordinates at the top of the menu to copy them.
  • On mobile: open Google Maps and drop a pin (make sure it's not on an address). Open the dropdown that says “Nearby Address:” and copy the coordinates that show up.
• Datetime
  • The date and time you are commemorating. Needs to be formatted: “mm-dd-yyyy hh:MM”.
• Timezone offset
  • The hour offset of the timezone where this took place. This is very important to get the correct star map. (e.g Pacific would be -8 or CET would be +1)

Optional settings

• Size (in millimaters)
  • For sizes ≤100mm, just the star map itself is generated, with text on the back. Suitable for ornaments or coasters.
  • For sizes >100mm and ≤150mm, the map is mounted on a square plaque with text on the back, suitable for wall mounting or mounting on a stand
  • For sizes >150mm, the map is mounted on a rectangular plaque with text below the map. Suitable for wall mounting or mounting on a stand.
  • Any other size of each type of mount can be achieved by scaling in the slicer.
• Ornament mode
  • Only applies when size is ≤100. Adds a hole to hang the map as an ornament
• Text style
  • Embedded: The text is embedded into the mount. Requires AMS to be able to see the letters.
  • Engraved: The text is engraved into the mount. Does not require AMS to be able to see the letters. Gives the option to paint in the letters.
  • Embossed: The text is raised up from the surface of the mount. Only available on the rectangular plaque. Allows a multicolor print without AMS using a manual filament change.
  • None: No text. Rectangular plaque with no text will default to a square plaque.
• Map style
  • Embedded: The map and border are embedded into the mount. Requires AMS.
  • Engraved: The map and border are engraved into the mount. Does not require AMS or manual filament switch but hardest to see without paint.
  • Embossed: The maps is raised up from the surface of the mount. Allows a multicoler print without AMS using a manual filament change
• FOV
  • Field of view, in degrees. The greater the number the more of the sky is in the map, but can get crowded on smaller map sizes.
• Line width
  • Width of the lines connecting the constellations.
• Min star mm
  • Printed size of the smallest (dimmest) star on the map.
• Max star mm
  • Printed size of the largest (brightest) star on the map.
• Edge ring thickness
  • Thickness of the circular line around the map.
• Border line width
  • Thickness of the border line around the edge of the square and rectangular plaques.
