Description

This is a Lord of the Rings themed dice and mini storage that also doubles as a roll tray! On the front, there's a design with the One Ring and the back has a design with the Tree of Gondor.

I designed this box to hold my sets of dice as well as some of my dnd minis. A common issue I had was I found it difficult to transport my fragile minis around carefully to avoid them getting damaged. This box uses a removable piece that securely holds the base of the minis to the box during transport. This works for all types of minis and does not rely on magnets to hold the mini in place (some of the minis I bought had no hole to include a magnet in the base).

Note this print profile was made for the A1 Mini. For larger bed sizes, you may be able to consolidate both parts onto the same plate.

Features

  1. This box can hold up to 4 sets of dice and 3 DnD minis
  2. The minis are secured in place (no magnet required) by slotting in small holders that hold the base down. This holds the mini securely and ensures that it won't hit the sides of the box during transportation.
  3. The box can be securely shut with friction or magnets. I've found that the box holds pretty well with just friction but if you want, I've included four holes for D8x2mm magnets to hold the box shut. If you have a smaller size magnet (like D6x2mm), I would just recommend superglueing the magnet in place or adjusting the hole size.
  4. The lid of the box doubles as a roll tray for your dice. I glued on some felt on the bottom so it rolls better. Room was intentionally left between the lid and the base to allow for a bit of felt.
  5. If you want to include a different design on the box (instead of the LOTR theme), feel free to swap the STL design modifier part with another. I've set the thickness of the modifier to be 0.4mm so that it's 2 layers thick.

How to secure the minis

  1. Insert one of the mini holder pieces into one of the three slots (flat part in first).
  2. Slot your mini in so that the base of it is under the mini holder.
  3. Insert the other mini holder piece in (round part in first) to secure the base of the mini. The two slots should form an oval shape for the mini's legs.

If your base is taller or shorter than the default piece in the print, I've included a separate version on a different plate that is slightly raised. The piece can be used to allow for thicker bases or thinner bases (by flipping it upside down). If these don't fit your mini, you can adjust the hole formed in the middle to be slightly larger by cutting the existing piece and give more room for your mini. The goal of this design was that this piece could be adjusted to fit any mini.

How to print without AMS

Note: If you don't have an AMS, you can still print this by changing the filament manually mid-layer. To do this, you can update the g-code to insert a pause when the print would normally call the AMS for a filament change. The code required and the instructions on how to do it can be found here for the A1-mini. The current print setup was designed with two filament changes to create two layers of the inlay design (black → yellow→ black). You may need to change the “{if toolchange_count > 1}” line to 0. I've had it skip the first filament change before.
