ROTADGET | Print-in-Place Tactile Focus Fidget
About the Model
Rotaget — a tactile focus tool designed for calm, repetitive interaction and subtle sensory feedback.
It’s not just a fidget, but a compact object meant to occupy the hands, help maintain focus, and deliver a pleasant mechanical feel.
The model is based on a print-in-place hidden mechanism and does not require any supports.
Surface & Tactile Feedback
The outer surface is covered with spherical micro-nodes.
They serve two purposes:
- provide a confident, non-slip grip;
- create a soft acupressure-like sensation when rotating the object.
The texture is intentionally rounded and non-abrasive, making it comfortable for long use while subtly stimulating the fingertips.
Internal Mechanism
Rotaget consists of two visually identical halves that rotate relative to each other.
Inside, a concealed shaft-and-socket mechanism is used:
- one half contains the axle;
- the other contains the matching socket.
This allows smooth rotation while keeping both parts securely locked together.
The mechanism is fully enclosed and prints in one go.
Included Versions
The package includes several variants:
- Standard Core — clean, minimal version for pure tactile interaction
- Lanyard Edition — includes a bail for a strap or paracord
- Keychain Edition — compact loop suitable for keyrings
Choose the version that best fits your use case.
⚠️ Important Printing Notes (Please Read)
Due to the tall geometry and the small contact area of the internal axle, bed adhesion is the most critical factor for a successful print.
⚠️ A standard brim will not help here, as it cannot reach the internal axle area.
Recommended approach:
- Clean build plate
I successfully printed this model on a standard Textured PEI Plate after washing it with warm water and dish soap. - Reduce print speed near the top
During the last ~30% of the print height, the nozzle applies leverage to the internal axle.
For safety, slow the print down (Silent Mode or ~50% speed).
No special tricks are required beyond this, but optional helpers are listed below.
Optional Adhesion Helpers
If you experience adhesion issues on your setup:
- Apply a thin layer of glue stick or liquid adhesive
- Try a build plate with stronger surface grip
Use these only if needed — the model can print cleanly without them on a well-prepared plate.
Post-Processing & First Use
- Initial movement
After printing, the halves may feel stiff or slightly stuck. This is normal for tight-tolerance print-in-place designs.
Apply a firm initial twist to “break in” the mechanism. - Break-in period
If rotation feels slightly scratchy at first, just spin it for a short while — the internal surfaces will naturally polish themselves.
💡 Pro Tip — “Hydraulic” Feel
For an extra-smooth, premium sensation:
- add one small drop of silicone oil or sewing machine oil into the gap between the halves.
With matte PLA, this creates an almost silent, fluid rotation that feels exceptionally satisfying.
No supports required.
