Bringing the Mi Door Sensor Gen2 Outdoors: A Custom 3D-Printed Weatherproof Solution

I’ve always wanted to use the Mi Door Sensor Gen2 to monitor my outdoor gate, but since it’s originally designed for indoor use, it lacks protection against the elements. I designed this custom 3D-printed waterproof and dustproof enclosure to transform this sensor into a rugged outdoor security tool.

Design & Installation Specifications:

• Perfect Fit for Square Posts: This model is specifically engineered for 35mm x 35mm square iron fence posts.
• Anti-Slip Mounting: To ensure a rock-solid grip and prevent the case from sliding down due to gravity, I recommend using a 2mm - 3mm rubber sheet (pad) between the enclosure and the iron post on the side where the screws are tightened.
• Hardware Required: Use 20mm - 25mm self-tapping screws for a secure and durable assembly.

Optimized for the Outdoors:

• Filament Recommendation: For long-term outdoor use, I highly recommend printing this with PETG or ABS. These materials provide the necessary UV and heat resistance to prevent warping or degradation under the sun and rain.
• Weather Shield: This enclosure is a "field test" design to see how well the indoor-rated Mi sensor performs in real-world outdoor environments while staying protected.

Smart Features & Connectivity:

• Gate Security: Monitor your house gate, fence, or mailbox in real-time.
• Logs & Automations: View detailed logs on your phone or trigger smart home scenes—like turning on floodlights or a "Welcome Home" routine when the gate opens.
• ⚠️ Bluetooth Gateway Required: As this sensor uses Bluetooth, it must be within range of a Bluetooth Gateway. You can use a dedicated Xiaomi Gateway or a Mi IP Camera with a built-in Bluetooth Gateway.
