Cyberpunk Mask - Facial Armor Inspired by the Apocalyptic Future

For this project, I designed and manufactured a cyberpunk-style mask using my Bambu Lab A1 printer, taking a visual reference image found on Pinterest (https://pin.it/4roINZwyh). Based on that inspiration, I adapted the design to turn it into a functional, comfortable, and visually striking piece, specifically intended for use as an element within the realm of cosplay and creative armor.

This piece is a wearable facial armor that combines futuristic and apocalyptic design elements, representing an alien skull with post-apocalyptic fashion touches. The mask is not only aesthetic but also functional, with an ergonomic design that allows it to be worn comfortably as facial protection or a cosplay accessory. The focus is on integrating 3D printing with manual finishing and personalization techniques, resulting in golden armor with metallic details that evoke a warrior cyberpunk style.

For the Creation Process, you need to consider the following sections:

1. Design and Printing:

The base model was created digitally inspired by the reference image, adapting aggressive shapes such as prominent teeth, chin contours, stylized ears, and an angular nose for an intimidating and futuristic look. I used the Bambu Lab A1 printer to print the mask in standard white PLA. The printing was done in a single main piece, with parameters optimized for high resolution and short times: 0.6 mm extruder, 0.3 mm layer height, 20% infill for lightness and strength, and a total printing time of approximately less than 6 hours. This ensured a solid yet lightweight structure, ideal for prolonged use.

2. Personalized Face Fit:

Once printed, the mask requires adjustment to the user's face for a perfect fit. For this, it is slightly heated with a heat gun (to about 60-70°C to soften the PLA without permanently deforming it) and manually molded against the face of the person who will wear it. This process is done immediately after printing and before any finishing, ensuring that the armor adapts ergonomically without compromising its structure.

3. Post-Processing and Finishing:

   - Sanding: After adjustment, I sanded the surface with progressive grit sandpaper (from 220 to 600) to remove imperfections and achieve a smooth finish, eliminating the typical layer lines of 3D printing.

   - UV Resin: I applied a layer of transparent UV resin to seal the piece, curing it under UV light for 10 minutes. This improved durability and prepared the surface for paints.

   - Primer: I applied an even coat of white spray primer to ensure optimal adhesion of the final paint.

   - Painting and Details: The main finish was done with golden enamel spray paint, applied in several thin layers for an elegant and resistant metallic sheen. For the teeth, I used glossy black liquid enamel paint, creating a dramatic contrast that highlights the menacing look. Additionally, I added golden metallic embellishments to the teeth, chin, ears, and nose, fixed with epoxy adhesive for a touch of realism and three-dimensional texture.

4. Functional and Comfort Elements:

Inside, I incorporated a soft black felt chin rest, hand-stitched with strong thread for greater comfort against the skin. To this chin rest, I added adjustable elastic bands, stitched on the sides, which allow the mask to be firmly secured to the head without causing discomfort. These details transform the mask into easy-to-wear, truly practical armor, suitable for dynamic movements in cosplay scenarios or themed events.
