Custom Rack and Pinion Focuser Upgrade for Sky-Watcher Evoguide 50ED

Project Overview

I have designed and built a custom Rack and Pinion (R&P) focusing mechanism for the Sky-Watcher Evoguide 50ED. The original helical focuser was replaced to provide better mechanical stability, eliminate "slop" during autofocusing, and allow for a seamless integration with the ZWO EAF (Electronic Automatic Focuser).

Technical Specifications

  • Drive System: Belt-driven Rack and Pinion 100mm.
  • Gear Ratio: 3.33:1 ($40T \text{ GT2 Pulley on the shaft} \div 12T \text{ GT2 Pulley on the EAF}$).
  • Resolution: Approximately 19,200 steps per full revolution of the pinion shaft.
  • Focusing Range: 0 to 13,000 steps (full travel).
  • Hardware: * Precision steel rack and pinion gear set.
    • GT2 timing belt (260mm) and pulleys.
    • Custom-machined/3D-printed mounting brackets for the EAF.
