Description

A sturdier support solution for the SONOFF iHost, designed to solve the stability issues caused by its narrow vertical footprint.

Full project description

The SONOFF iHost has a nice vertical design, but its very narrow footprint makes it not as stable as it should be. In everiday use, even a fairly stiff Ethernet cable can be enough to affect its balance.

To address this, I designed two support versions: a desktop stand and a wall-mounted stand. Both are meant to improve stability while preserving proper airflow around the device.

The desktop version is made of two parts: the main body and the base.

They are assembled using 4x M3x16 countersunk screws. No threaded inserts or nuts are required, since the holes are designed for direct self-threading thanks to a three-lobe hole geometry spaced at 120°.

Splitting the desktop stand into two parts also improves printability by reducing the need for supports. In fact, supports would not really be necessary at all if it were not for the lattice-style side retaining structures.

The wall-mounted version follows the same design language, but it is made as a single-piece model.

Both versions are designed to maintain proper airflow for the electronics, with large openings aligned with the ventilation grilles located on the bottom of the iHost.

Fit and retention

The iHost is retained by a gentle snap-fit action that uses the flexibility of the lattice side walls.
In the wall-mounted version, retention relies on the single side wall; in the desktop version, both side walls flex slightly during insertion.
Curved and angled inner surfaces then guide the device into the correct centered position and help keep it securely seated.

Print profile description

The included print profile contains 4 build plates:

  • 2 high-quality plates
  • 2 standard-quality plates

Each pair includes both versions of the model, with one version per plate: one for the desktop stand and one for the wall-mounted stand.

The high-quality version features:

  • reduced print speeds
  • fuzzy skin on the visible surfaces, to help conceal seams
  • manually positioned seams to keep them as hidden as possible
  • 3 walls
  • cubic infill

The standard-quality version is optimized for faster printing and features:

  • higher print speeds
  • 2 walls
  • cross hatch infill
  • manually positioned seams to keep them as hidden as possible

The main advantage of the standard version is simply shorter print time.

Hardware needed

For the desktop version only:

  • 4x M3x16 countersunk screws
  • 4x 6x2 mm adhesive silicone feet

Shallow locating recesses are provided on the underside of the base to guide correct positioning of the silicone feet.

For the wall version only:

  • 2x wall plugs and countersunk screws up to 3.5 mm in diameter
