Description
Automated Self-Watering Globe for Modular Moss Poles
If you’re tired of your moss pole drying out and preventing your plant’s aerial roots from bonding, this automated self-watering globe is the solution. This gravity-fed reservoir acts as a water tower for your setup, delivering a controlled, steady drip that keeps the core of your moss pole hydrated for days. It eliminates frequent misting and provides the consistent environment climbing plants need.
This system is fully modular. It fits the top of my Jumbo Modular Moss Pole, and the included Adapter allows it to seat securely onto the Rigid modular moss pole remix.
Vital Calibration Note:
This is a precision-gravity design. To calibrate and maintain the slow, consistent drip required for optimal moss pole performance, you must install an aa109 self-tapping screw into the internal orifice. This screw functions as an adjustable flow restrictor. Once the screw is in, you can adjust its depth to calibrate your precise flow rate—tighten it to slow the drip down, or loosen it to speed it up. This calibration is essential for effective "set and forget" operation.
Features:
- System-Wide Compatibility: The included adapter allows this globe to work with both the Standard Moss Pole and the larger 58mm Jumbo system.
- Gravity-Fed Irrigation: Gravity ensures water is pulled through the globe tip and down the internal column of the pole, providing core-to-bottom hydration.
- Adjustable Drip Control: The required aa109 self-tapping screw gives you complete control over the irrigation rate.
Printing and Preparation:
For a reliable, watertight print that stands up to constant moisture, please follow these guidelines:
- Material: Use PETG for the globe. PLA is not recommended as it will break down over time when in constant contact with water and can be porous.
- Watertightness: Set your wall loops to 4 minimum. Increase top and bottom layers. This is the single most important setting to prevent leaks. Infill (15-20%) should be Gyroid for added structural strength.
- Supports: The globe's overhanging lip requires supports. Tree supports (auto) work well and are easy to remove.
- Assembly: After printing, locate the small hole in the nozzle tip. Install the aa109 self-tapping screw. Fill the reservoir and test-adjust the screw depth to achieve your desired, steady drip rate.
I have also developed round parametric net pot, Square Net Pot Generator (Square or Round Base) and parametric cache pot generators. These let you 3D print custom pots perfectly sized for any plant and any media - especially semi-hydro! Find more on my profile!
