HexaBees Backer Hexagon Honey Bee Hive Base System

HexaBees is a wall-mounted observation hive built for indoor/out viewing with safe outdoor bee access. Designed to print on a print plate of 256 x 256, the initial hive starts with 7 modules, connecting to each other with clips that allow bees to move freely (or not) throughout the hive. There is a queen excluder connector; a connector for airflow; and open access between bees. To use, simply slide in and out. Behind each hexagon is a French cleat that must be printed with supports, and then popped out after it's finished printing. 

A French cleat connector is included; simply anchor to your wall and they begin to connect together. There is also a wall template, so you know exactly where to place your anchors for the French cleat screws. Begin with a compact 7-hex base, then grow your hive one module at a time as your colony expands. You'll need to cut ¼" clear plexiglass panels for the front of each hive; if you're local in the US, I can print and ship to those to you. Also included is a window connector that allows the bees to move in and out of the hive freely. 

Last, I recommend getting an inexpensive bee suit, and if this is your first time owning bees, join your local apiary society and learn all aspects of beekeeping. If you need a mated queen, check out Mann Lake for supply. They strongly recommend Carniolan honey bees (Apis mellifera carnica) for their calm, easygoing nature. That temperament makes them a great pick if you are new to beekeeping or keeping hives in a city setting. A colony led by a Carniolan queen is generally easier to handle, so you can work your hives with more confidence and less stress.
