Description
Hryhorii Skovoroda was a prominent Ukrainian philosopher, poet, and educator of the 18th century. He is often called the “Ukrainian Socrates” because of his simple lifestyle and deep moral teachings.
Skovoroda’s main contribution to humanity was his philosophy of self-knowledge and inner freedom. He believed that true happiness comes from understanding one’s own nature and living in harmony with it — an idea he described as “know yourself.” His teachings emphasized spiritual development over material wealth, influencing later philosophical thought.
For Ukraine, Skovoroda became a symbol of national wisdom and cultural identity. His works, written in a mix of Ukrainian, Church Slavonic, and other languages, helped shape Ukrainian intellectual tradition. He also contributed to education by teaching and spreading ideas about personal growth, ethics, and freedom.
His legacy continues to inspire people in Ukraine and around the world to seek truth, simplicity, and inner peace.
