AN/ASQ-228 ATFLIR Targeting Pod – Scale 1:48

With this model, it is now finally possible to actually use existing laser-guided bombs as such. In combination with suitable armaments (e.g., the already released GBU-24 Paveway III), the ATFLIR Pod opens up significantly more realistic deployment possibilities

This model represents the AN/ASQ-228 ATFLIR in 1:48 scale and was developed as a detailed attachment part for modern jet models. The characteristic design with the striking sensor section was implemented as faithfully as possible to the original, while the construction was simultaneously optimized for reliable 3D printing

Options for the Front Section

The front part of the pod can be implemented in different ways:

  • 0.2 mm Nozzle:
Allows for finer details directly in the print, but requires significantly more time and can be more difficult to print depending on settings
  • 0.4 mm Nozzle + Post-processing (recommended):
Significantly more reliable and faster to print. The details can then simply be hand-painted to achieve a clean and convincing result

In my experience, the 0.4 mm nozzle variant works significantly better overall and is the more recommendable solution

Use Cases and Outlook

The pod is currently designed specifically for mounting on the F/A-18 and was constructed for the position on the right under the fuselage (viewed from the front). This makes it fit perfectly with corresponding models and allows for a harmonious representation of modern deployment configurations

At the same time, an extended version is already in planning that will be compatible with standardized suspensions. This will be particularly suitable for aircraft such as the A-10 etc and will significantly expand the range of applications (Already published)

Compatibility and Integration

The model was designed to harmoniously blend into the style of COBI aircraft. In combination with modern armament, the ATFLIR Pod creates a significantly more realistic overall effect

Note on Print in Place Design

This model is my first Print in Place design. Therefore, tolerances may vary slightly depending on the printer and settings

In my tests, all movable parts could be released by hand after printing. However, depending on print quality or material, it may be necessary in individual cases to gently assist with pliers or a similar tool. I hope, however, that it works just as well for you as it does for me (A fresh calibration before printing can help)

Please work with extra caution on the universal version!

Minor Post-processing

The overhangs on the model on the side facing the print bed will likely look very unsightly, which is why I recommend 'cutting' them nicely afterwards with a cutter or the Bambu Scraper

Background: AN/ASQ-228 ATFLIR

The ATFLIR is a modern targeting pod with infrared and laser targeting systems and is primarily used on carrier-based aircraft. It enables precise target acquisition and is a central component in the deployment of laser-guided armaments

Development

This model was independently developed and specifically optimized for 3D printing. The focus was on good printability, stable construction, and the most realistic possible implementation in 1:48 scale
