Bedside Box for Remotes & Phone Storage
Or: "How to invest 930g of PLA so a remote never disappears in bed again."
This model arose from a very specific problem – and probably an even more specific bed situation.
Between our bed and nightstand, there was just enough space for a custom solution:
A large bedside box with 4 remote compartments, additional phone storage, and a USB-C cable pass-through.
Does anyone have the exact same combination of bed dimensions, nightstand distance, and remotes?
Probably not.
But if so: Congratulations – this model was practically created for you. 😄
The entire box slides onto the side of the bed frame and hangs stably between the bed and nightstand.
This way, remotes and phones are finally within reach in a fixed spot – instead of disappearing somewhere between the mattress, blanket, and existential crisis at night.
Construction
The model consists of 2 individual printed parts that are slid together after printing using an integrated T-slot connection
This means the model remains somewhat printable despite its size – at least in theory.
It was printed in:
- BambuLab PLA Matte – Nardo Gray
- Layer height: 0.20 mm Standard
Many settings were specifically optimized, and the model should ideally be printed with the existing print profile.
A small warning before printing 😄
The print is… ambitious.
- Material consumption: approx 930 g PLA
- Print time on my BambuLab P2S: approx 1 day and 11 hours
In short:
You don't just "quickly" start this print on a whim.
But hey – others print helmets or entire Stormtrooper armors.
You're just printing a luxurious command center for your bed.
Suitable Bed Dimensions
For the box to fit, the following dimensions should be observed:
- Maximum thickness of the bed side frame: 8 cm
(for padded bed sides) - Maximum height of the bed board:
Distance from top edge of side frame to top edge of slatted base = 6.8 cm
With harder materials or thicker bed sides, sliding it on could be quite tight.
External Dimensions (complete box)
Both boxes together result in the following external dimensions:
- Length: 20.5 cm
- Width: 12.1 cm
- Height: 23.3 cm
Remote Control Compartments
The length specifications refer to the usable height up to the higher back edge of the compartment.
This allows the remote to disappear neatly into the compartment, yet remain easily accessible from the front due to the lower edge.
If you subtract approximately 3 cm from the specified length, the respective remote would be flush with the lower front edge.
However, it should not be shorter – otherwise, removal becomes a bit fiddly.
Width and depth correspond to the maximum possible dimensions of the remote controls.
A little play is expressly desired – after all, we are not building a safe here. 😄

- Length: 20.3 cm
- Width: 5.5 cm
- Depth: 2.9 cm

Compartment 4
Suitable for smaller remote controls up to:
- Length: 15 cm
- Width: 4 cm
- Depth: 2.9 cm

Phone Storage
Additionally, the box has an integrated phone compartment with the following internal dimensions:
- Length: 19.9 cm
- Depth: 7.7 cm
- Height: 7.5 cm
On the back there is a cutout for a USB-C cable.
The cable pass-through was designed so that the cable is neatly guided and does not constantly slip out.
Additionally, I lined all compartments with 9 mm Armaflex insulation mat.
This not only provides a bit more protection and less rattling, but, more importantly, fulfills a crucial core function at night:
Remote controls and smartphones can simply be "tossed in" quietly while half-asleep at night – without waking up your girlfriend from a deep sleep with sudden plastic clatter. 😄
Conclusion
Is this model extremely specific? Absolutely!
Is it perhaps slightly oversized for "a few remote controls"? Possibly!
But does it work amazingly well and finally bring order to the bedside? Definitely! 😄
Perhaps there is actually someone else out there with exactly this problem.
