🚪 Door sign with Braille, Pictogram and Clear Text

A tactile door sign that combines raised clear text, a pictogram, and touchable Braille script on one sign surface. All content is freely configurable in the Parametric Model Maker.

🌱 The Story Behind It

Good signage should be readable by all people, including by touch. The impetus came during an apartment viewing with a visually impaired acquaintance. I noticed how few doors are meaningfully labeled. This led to the creation of this sign with three complementary levels of information: printed clear text, a clear pictogram, and tactile Braille script.

The sign is suitable for apartments, offices, doctor's practices, hotels, and guesthouses. It fits anywhere rooms need to be clearly and barrier-free labeled.

Note: I am not a Braille user myself. If you have experience with dot spacing according to DIN 32976 or with tactile sensitivity, I would appreciate your feedback in the comments. This feedback will directly inform the next version.

Three levels of information:

• Raised clear text, freely selectable or from 12 standard room types.
• Raised Braille script in the basic script according to DIN 32976, with tactile dome geometry.
• Pictogram from 12 predefined symbols or from your own SVG file.

🧭 Important

• Print the sign flat, with the back on the build plate. Clear text, Braille, and pictogram face upwards.
• Use a layer height of 0.16 mm. The Braille domes need this resolution for the dots to be round and uniformly tactile.
• Do not use supports. The 45-degree inner edge of the frame is self-supporting.
• Tolerance between sign and frame: Standard value 0.3 mm per side. Reduce to 0.2 mm for too loose a fit, increase to 0.4 mm for too tight a fit.

🏠 Predefined Room Types

Bathroom, Bedroom, Cellar, Dining Room, Garage, Guests, Hallway, Children's Room, Kitchen, Living Room, Office, Toilet, and Room Number for numbering in hotels and guesthouses. Additionally, a custom motif with your own SVG upload is possible.

🌍 Languages

The standard labels are available in German, English, and Spanish. They can be switched using the Label_language parameter. Custom text overrides the standard label in any language.

⠿ Braille Note

The basic script according to DIN 32976 is implemented, letter by letter, not the full script with abbreviations. Numbers are correctly delimited from the patterns of letters a to j with the number sign as a prefix. Spanish accented letters á, é, í, ó, ú, and ñ are encoded in standard Spanish Braille.

🖨️ Print Recommendations

• Nozzle diameter: 0.4 mm.
• Layer height: 0.16 mm, for clean Braille domes.
• Material: PLA, PETG, or ASA, depending on the application site.
• Supports: not necessary, the frame's inner edge is self-supporting as a 45-degree dovetail.
• Orientation: both parts with the back on the build plate, already prepared this way in the Parametric Model Maker.
• An AMS system is recommended but not strictly necessary. Colors are freely selectable.

🔧 Customizable Parameters (Selection)

• Sign dimensions: Width, Height, Thickness, and Corner Radius.
• Font size and pictogram size.
• Braille dot diameter, dot height, and dot spacing.
• Colors for sign, accent (text and Braille), pictogram, and frame.
• Frame wall thickness and back wall thickness.
• Screw diameter and countersunk dimensions.
• Tolerance between sign and frame.

🎨 Assembly

1. Slide the sign into the frame from above. The dovetail profile holds it securely, with a tolerance of 0.3 mm per side.
2. Screw the frame to the door using the two countersunk holes in the back wall.
3. The screw heads are then recessed under the sign.
