Description

Your favorite beverage now can come in for a safe landing on a Super Heavy inspired landing pad, complete with articulating Grid Fins.  There is no springs or elastics, all motion is achieved using gravity and rack and pinion gears.  I avoided using the SpaceX logo in this model to prevent any IP issues, but you may want to check out my other SpaceX model as some parts are interchangeable.

 

Printed  in Bambu Lab PLA Basic, the assembly is pretty straightforward.  Once you have printed all the parts, cut off a  ~12cm piece of silver filament  to use as axles for all the gears.  Start with the Base and mount the gears, be sure to support the gear bracket laterally with your finger to prevent breaking them.  If you are having trouble inserting the filament in the gear bracket you may need to ream the hole out slightly with a needle file.  Trim the filament off with your flush cut side cutters and you are set.

 

The Grid Fins just press fit together, if desired a drop of superglue in the cavity in the bottom would lock them together.

 

Attach the Grid Fins the rocket body using the silver filament as well.

Once you have attached the Grid Fins, place the rocket body on the base, aligning the pinon gears with the racks in the Rocket body.  Lastly the Landing Pad Table just drops in the top and it is assembled.  If movement of the Table is not free some light sanding of the outermost rack which engages the Grid Fin gears should remedy the problem.  The tolerance between the Table and the Rocket body needed to be tight to keep the Grid Fins synchronized.  Happy Printing!
