🩸 The Breach: Escape the City
Overview
The Breach: Escape the City is a 1–4 player cooperative tabletop maze game set in a ruined city being consumed by a magical force known as the Breach.
Players explore a modular tile map, fight monsters, collect artifacts, and race against the spreading corruption to escape through the final gate.
Game Setup
- Place all 33 tiles face down on a table or flat surface.
- Mix the tiles thoroughly so no player knows where any tile is located.
- Randomly place the tiles into the board spaces with the text side facing down.
- Choose a character class for each player and prepare any class sheets.
- Place all player miniatures on the Start tile.
- Choose a starting tile for the Breach.
The game is now ready to begin. Because all tiles are shuffled and placed face down, players will not know whether a tile contains a monster, artifact, rope, or a blank space until it is revealed during play.
Important
Once a tile has been revealed, leave it face up for the rest of the game. Revealed tiles remain visible so players can track explored areas and plan their route through the city.
🎯 Main Objectives
1. Collect Artifacts
- There are multiple artifact tiles hidden in the city
- Players must collect 3 artifacts total
- Any combination of artifacts counts
- Once 3 are collected, the final gate can be opened
2. Cross the Chasm
At one point in the map, players must cross a broken chasm.
To cross:
- Use a rope to safely cross (works for the whole group)
- If no rope is available, roll a d6:
- 1–3: Take 5 damage
- 4–6: Successfully cross
3. Open the Gate and Escape
After collecting 3 artifacts and crossing the chasm, players may reach the final gate and attempt escape.
🔄 Turn Structure
Each player takes a turn and chooses ONE action:
- Move 2 spaces
OR - Move 1 space and use an ability
OR - Move 1 space and flip a tile
🧩 Tile Types
When a tile is flipped, it reveals:
- 🕷 Monster encounter (combat begins immediately)
- 💎 Artifact (collectable item)
- 🪢 Rope (used for chasm crossing)
- ⬜ Blank tile (nothing happens)
⚔️ Combat System
When a monster is revealed, combat begins. The player and the monster take alternating turns.
On the player’s turn, roll a D20. If the result meets or exceeds the monster’s Armor Class, the attack hits and damage is dealt. On the monster’s turn, it also rolls a D20 to attempt to hit the player using the same rule.
A player may only assist in combat if they are within three squares of the active player. If an assisting player is within three squares, the monster randomly chooses its target between the active player and the assisting player. This can be determined by flipping a coin or rolling a die.
Combat continues until either the monster is defeated or all involved players are defeated.
