Description

I wanted to share this project because it’s honestly just as mesmerizing for adults to watch as it is for kids to play with, me and my daughter have loved it.
It’s my take on the classic spinning stacking toy that you often see in preschools, STEM classrooms, and sensory spaces.

The idea is simple: you slide a colorful geometric shape onto the threaded rod, let go, and watch it spin all the way to the bottom. It creates a really lovely, rhythmic sound and a visual effect that is genuinely hypnotic. Because of that visual and tactile feedback, it makes a wonderful sensory or SEN toy for children who thrive on repetitive, calming motions, while also introducing early STEM concepts like gravity, gears, and motion.

To get that smooth, satisfying spin, the textures need to be as clean as possible. Here is what worked well for me:

  • Filament: Regular PLA is perfect for this. It’s slick enough that the pieces slide easily without binding. Using a variety of bright colors for the different shapes really brings the whole thing to life.
  • The Screw/Rod: I’d suggest printing this with 0.16mm to keep the threads smooth. It also helps to add 3 or 4 walls to give the rod enough strength to handle being dropped or handled roughly by toddlers.
  • The Shapes: Standard 0.2mm layer height works fine here.
