Description

SwapSpool is a reusable modular filament spool designed for refill filament and everyday spool management.

It is built around a practical, reusable design: the spool can be opened, swapped, secured with a strap, labeled with a customizable tag, and locked in place with an integrated spool lock. The rim also includes an integrated filament clip and a material/temperature marker, so the filament end and spool type are easy to identify at a glance.

Main features:
- Reusable spool for refill filament
- Quick-swap strap slot for Velcro or similar latches
- Integrated filament clip on the rim
- Swappable customizable name/material tag
- Spool lock system to keep the assembly secure
- Honeycomb side design to reduce material while keeping the spool rigid
- Multiple variants included for different material/temperature use cases

Material and temperature versions

I included different labeled versions to make spool management easier, but the physical model is the same. The PLA, PETG and ABS versions only differ by the printed temperature marker.

These labels are my own conservative recommendations:

  • PLA: for standard reusable spool use. I do not recommend using PLA printed spools for filament drying.
  • PETG 55 °C: suggested for low-temperature drying, such as drying PLA at around 55 °C.
  • ABS 70 °C: suggested for higher-temperature drying, up to around 70 °C.

⚠️Please note that softening temperature depends on the material, manufacturer, additives, color, print settings and other factors. Always check your own filament specifications before using any printed spool in a dryer.

✏️If you prefer your own text or temperature value, use the clean version and add custom text directly in Bambu Studio.

Customizer tutorial

The included .scad files can be used directly with the MakerWorld Customizer.

Use single_tag.scad to create one custom tag, or batch_tags.scad to generate multiple tags at once.

Single tag

Use single_tag.scad if you only need one label.

In the Customizer, edit:

  • text_line_1: main text, for example PETG
  • text_line_2: optional second line, for example 55C
  • text_line_1_size: size of the first line
  • text_line_2_size: size of the second line
  • line_spacing: distance between the two text lines
  • font_family: choose the font
  • font_style: regular, bold, italic, etc.

Leave text_line_2 empty if you want a single-line tag.

Batch tags

Use batch_tags.scad if you want to generate several tags at once.

Similarly to the single tag generator, in Batch text settings you can adjust:

  • single_line_text_size: text size used for one-line tags
  • double_line_1_text_size: text size used for the first line of two-line tags
  • double_line_2_text_size: text size used for the second line of two-line tags
  • line_spacing: distance between the two text lines
  • font_family: choose the font
  • font_style: regular, bold, italic, etc.

In the batch_texts field:

  • Use a comma , to separate different tags.
  • Use a vertical bar | to split one tag into two lines.

Examples:

  • PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA
  • PETG|CF → PETG will be in first row, CF in the second
  • PLA, PETG|55C, ABS|70C, ASA, TPU

This will generate multiple tags in one plate.

In Batch layout you can also adjust:

  • tags_per_row: how many tags are placed in each row
  • horizontal_gap: spacing between tags horizontally
  • vertical_gap: spacing between rows
