Description
working in a warehouse or factory with extreme temps can be brutal. I've designed this magnetic USB fan base to mount anywhere and stay there to provide some relief from the heat. After trying numerous fully 3d printed and battery powered options and being let down by short lived batteries or weak mounting solutions this has been the best option for continuous use in harsh environments where strength and dependability matter most.
The body of the magnetic base is printed in TPU 95A with 2 pauses at different layer heights to place neodymium magnets and a sacrificial raft support.
The sacrificial raft must be printed in a material that will not warp under the nozzle heat of printing TPU. PETG has been working for me but other filaments that print at a similar or greater nozzle temp than TPU will also work.
PLATE 1 Start by printing the sacrificial raft in PETG and place aside.
PLATE 2 Print the base in TPU95A, the print will pause at the 40th layer for you to manually place the cupped neodymium magnets. Insure that the magnets sit flush with the walls of the TPU print as to avoid nozzle strike going forward with the print. clean the top of the magnets with IPA to remove any oil or debris. RESUME PRINT after all 6 magnets are in place.
PLATE 2 the print will again pause at the 58th layer. Place the sacrificial raft in the cavity with a FEW drops of CA adhesive to keep the raft in place (LESS IS MORE) and resume the print.
After the print is complete, separate the raft from within the by breaking the glue bond with IPA and some gentle persuasion with a flat ruler or rolling an allen key form edge to edge and pulling the raft out of the cavity. place the base on the fans foot with some double sided tape or a drop of CA.
