Description

Automatic Trash Bin Lid Opener – String and Hook for IKEA Cabinet

A practical upgrade for a cleaner kitchen workflow: open the cabinet, and the trash bin opens with it.

A simple mechanism that automatically opens the trash bin lid when you open or pull out the cabinet.

The string is attached to the moving cabinet front, door, or drawer. As the cabinet opens, the string becomes tensioned and pulls the hook mounted on the trash bin lid, lifting it automatically. When the cabinet closes, the lid returns to its normal position.

This model was designed for an IKEA cabinet and a trash bin with a similar lid design, but it can also be adapted to other bins and cabinets with comparable construction.

Features

  • Automatic lid opening when the cabinet is opened
  • Simple string-and-hook mechanism
  • No electronics, springs, or complex hardware required
  • Adjustable by changing the string length or mounting position
  • Suitable for IKEA kitchen cabinets and similar setups

Installation

  1. Attach the printed bracket (hook) to the trash can lid using double-sided tape.

Attach the second hook to the fixed upper or side section of the cabinet using double-sided tape.

Loop the cord over the hooks.

!!!!  When mounting the hooks, adjust the cord length so that there is a bit of slack when the cabinet is closed.

  2. Open the cabinet and check that the cord lifts the lid smoothly.
  3. Adjust the mounting position or cord length if necessary.

Recommended Materials

  • PLA for hooks
  • TPU for cord
  • You can use ordinary string if your basket requires a different length. Simply tie it to the printed hooks.

Notes

The exact position of the hook and the string attachment point may need small adjustments depending on the bin lid weight, cabinet travel, and available space. It is best to test the mechanism temporarily before permanent installation.
