Description

These print in place winding spools are designed for 60" / 150cm and 120" / 300cm soft measuring tapes having widths up to ¾" / 20 mm. I have updated the models several times based on user feedback (thank you!), so I recommend downloading one of the “Designer” labelled models if you want the latest improvements. Please keep the feedback coming and I will continue to improve the models and add more versions. There are currently five original “Designer” profiles:

  1. For 60"/150cm: Original Handle Design: This is a tweaked version of my original design taking into account user feedback including, a) a slot that will accommodate tapes with either a flat crimped on end or riveted on metal end, b) a stronger internal spool-to-spindle connection, and c) a realigned slot so a tool can be inserted to help break free the spool (a tool is not typically needed but filaments vary in adhesion).

  2. For 60"/150cm: Handle Design with Top Cap: The number one most requested addition from users has been a version with a cap, so this is it! The main spool is still a one piece print in place model, but I've modified the outside of the model to accept a snap on cap, also included in this print profile. I recommend breaking free the spinning portion of the model before snapping on the cap.

  3. For 60"/150cm: Finger Indent Design: This design includes all the original model improvements but replaces the handle with a finger indent for winding. Some people have asked for this version to better fit in drawers/storage spaces.

  4. For 120"/300cm: Original Handle Design: This is a tweaked version of my original design taking into account user feedback including, a) a slot that will accommodate tapes with either a flat crimped on end or riveted on metal end, b) a stronger internal spool-to-spindle connection, and c) a realigned slot so a tool can be inserted to help break free the spool (a tool is not typically needed but filaments vary in adhesion).

  5. For 120"/300cm: Handle Design with Cap: The main spool is still a one piece print in place model, but I've modified the outside of the model to accept a snap on cap, also included in this print profile. I recommend breaking free the spinning portion of the model before snapping on the cap.

After removing the model from the print bed, use a little force to free the spool from some small supports, and run the spool back and forth a few times to smooth it out. A tool can be put in the slot to help break it free, if needed. Putting a few drops of light oil in the top center hole will make it run even smoother. I've printed in both PLA Matte and PLA Basic. Both work fine but the mechanism runs smoother with PLA Basic. PLA Silk grades generally have lower layer adhesion and I would not recommend them for this model. I have received feedback from a few people that PLA Silk versions have broken.

Don't reorient the model or add supports even if you get a floating regions warning, just print the model bottom side down without additional supports. I also suggest using 0.2mm layer height if you choose not to print with the uploaded 3mf print profile.

If you like the model, please consider giving it a Boost.

Enjoy!
