Little Boy Atomic Bomb
Print Profile(1)

Description
The first atomic bomb to be used in warfare in human history!
The bomb employed a gun-type configuration, firing a subcritical mass of uranium-235 towards three concentric rings of uranium-235, each also subcritical, to create a supercritical mass of uranium and initiate a fission chain reaction. This design of nuclear weapon was not field-tested prior to its deployment. The first atomic bomb, detonated on July 16, 1945, in the New Mexico desert, was based on plutonium.
“Little Boy” was the name of the first atomic bomb used in warfare, dropped by the United States on Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II. On August 6, 1945, the bomb was dropped from the B-29 Superfortress bomber Enola Gay piloted by Paul Tibbets at an altitude of approximately 31,000 feet (9.448 km) above Hiroshima and detonated at approximately 1,800 feet (548 m) above ground at 8:15 am Japan time.
