Description

Solar System Modelling Clay Template Gauge or Caliper - Reference piece

This model can be used both to sculpt the planets and moons with modeling pastes and to visually compare their size differences at a glance, all in a single piece.

With this model, you don't have to 3D print all the planets and moons and end up with lots of bulky pieces. Instead, you have all the dimensions of all the planets and moons in a single flat piece, making it easier to compare and understand the differences in size between the main planets and moons in the solar system.

Easily sculpt all the planets and key moons to scale 1:1'188'500'000 using modeling clay, air-dry clay, Play-Doh, Fimo, DAS, and more.
This single 3D-printed tool combines a caliper and template, helping you precisely match each diameter for an accurate Solar System model. Play with different colours, mix them and create effects on surfaces and enjoy a fun, hands-on way to learn about space!
Perfect for educational projects, school activities, science fairs, or creative home crafts.

Model features

  • Covers all major planets and major moons dimensions:
    • 8 planets of the Solar System (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune)
    • Pluto (Dwarf planet but a must-have 😉)
    • 7 major moons (Moon, Callisto, Europa, Ganymede, Io, Titan, Triton)
  • Accurate linear scale of 1 : 1,188,500,000
  • Works with any modelling paste
  • Compact, easy-to-use one-piece design
  • Data source for the model: NASA's Planetary data
  • Low relief lettering for all text
  • Size: 110 x 175 x 2 mm (4,330 x 6,889 x 0.0787 inches)
  • Ideal for: creating your own solar system to scale, educational purposes or DIY activities
  • Great for both kids and adult

Model details

Containing a caliper-guage tool to create and measure the dimensions of the main celestial bodies and some major moons in scale as STL file this model makes it possible to realise to scale:

  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Earth (1.07 cm, 0.42 inch ∅ diameter)
    • Moon
  • Mars
  • Jupiter (largest object, 12.03 cm, 4.73 inch ∅ diameter)
    • Ganymede
    • Callisto
    • Europa
    • Io
  • Saturn
    • Titan
  • Uranus
  • Neptune
    • Triton
  • Pluto (smallest object, 0.2 cm, 0.078 inch ∅ diameter)

How to use it

Is it difficult to obtain precise spheres with the correct dimensions and make the planets and moons of the solar system to scale with modelling clay? With this measuring gauge tool you have a reference for creating spheres with the right diameter using the material of your choice.

With this "Swiss cheese slice" gauge you can make your own solar system with the material of your choice and check whether the dimensions are correct in order to make it to scale.

Add material and make the piece spherical until the dimensions match those indicated for the planet or moon you are creating. If the sphere you have obtained does not match, add or remove material in order to obtain the right size.

You can use your favourite modelling clay (PONGO, Play Doh, DAS, FIMO etc) and indulge in colours to create marbled effects that reflect the surface or atmosphere of the planet.

The structure and dimensions of the gauge make it durable, easy to hold and use. On the gauge there are inscriptions in bas-relief indicating for each shape the matching planet or moon.

You can also use the gauge as a reference to find objects of the right size to create the various planets and moons such as plastic balls, polystyrene etc.

⚠️Important notes

  • Some modelling pastes may shrink and lose volume with time or baking (e.g. FIMO); this may slightly affect the scale of the objects, but only minimally. Prefer the use of modelling pastes that do not shrink or deform with drying.

  • If the model has to be washed after use, preferably dry clean or with a slightly damp cloth.

  • Please read the entire description here carefully and read the READ ME FILE enclosed with the downloadable material for details on use and contact details.

3D printing settings

  • Layers: 0,15 mm (min 4 layer for top and bottom)
  • Infill: 15 %
  • Infill pattern: grid (strengthens the structure and makes it resistant to bending)
  • Plate: smooth
  • Material: PLA, ABS, etc
  • Supports and brims: No supports and no brims
  • Ironing: yes, all top surfaces (gives a smooth effect and hides print lines)
  • I suggest using the settings included in the included print profile created by me.

Estimated PLA material to be used: 17 grams
Estimated print time: 1 hr 30 min

ℹ️ Results: The model shown in the pictures was printed with white PLA, Bambulab P1S printer, smooth plate - PLA plate

⚠️NOTE: Print at reduced speed to achieve a better result. Depending on the print settings, lettering may be less well executed.
