Description

This 3D-printed model recreates the Half-Hour Puzzle Cube, a classic 3×3×3 dissection puzzle designed by Stewart Coffin in 1975. As highlighted in Coffin’s book Geometric Puzzle Design, the Half-Hour Puzzle Cube challenges solvers to assemble six uniquely shaped pieces into a perfect cube. This puzzle’s name reflects the approximate time it takes for an experienced solver to find its single solution.

Model Features

  • Block Design: The puzzle pieces have a modern cubic block aesthetic.
  • Custom Five-Sided Box Housing: A thoughtfully designed box houses the puzzle. The open side allows easy access while offering a secure and elegant way to display and store the pieces.
  • Singular Solution: With only one solution, this puzzle offers a rewarding challenge for puzzle enthusiasts.

Puzzle Composition
This model is comprised of six polycubes of varying configurations:

  • Three Tetracubes: Each composed of four unit cubes.
  • Three Pentacubes: Each composed of five unit cubes.

These pieces fit together to create a symmetrical 3x3x3 cube, requiring careful planning and spatial reasoning…or luck.

Historical Context
Stewart Coffin, a renowned puzzle designer, created the Half-Hour Puzzle Cube in 1975. He described it as one of his most balanced cube puzzles, where the piece configurations offer enough difficulty to keep solvers engaged without overwhelming them.

Comparison to Similar Puzzles
While similar in concept to the Soma Cube, the Half-Hour Puzzle Cube’s single solution and unique piece composition set it apart. The Soma Cube, with seven pieces and 240 possible solutions, is more accessible, whereas the Half-Hour Puzzle Cube demands precise placement of each piece, making it a more advanced challenge.
