Why PETG is the right choice for a beer crate, and PLA is a poor choice:
PLA is unsuitable for beer crates because:
- Becomes brittle and fragile in freezing temperatures in a garage or car during winter
- Becomes soft and loses shape at temperatures above 60°C (a hot car in summer)
- Easily breaks upon impact or if dropped due to the material's brittleness
- Degrades from moisture from cold cans and bottles via condensation
- Deforms over time under the weight of beer bottles (creep)
- Is sensitive to UV light from the sun
PETG is the right choice because:
- Retains its properties from freezing temperatures to 80°C
- Is impact-resistant and can withstand bumps and drops
- Bends instead of breaking under overload
- Is resistant to moisture and condensation
- Exhibits minimal creep under constant load
- Is UV-resistant
- Is "food safe" (same material as soda bottles)
In short: PETG provides a durable beer crate usable year-round in the Danish climate, while a PLA crate will likely break within a shorter time
