Description

New and improve Version 2 now available, please be sure to download the version 2 profile!

I have adapted McFly's model to use American coins instead of Euros. Of course, there are a lot more European coins (8) than American coins (4), so I've basically doubled up on each denomination. As an added benefit to this doubling up, should a coin not fall into the first slot (something that I have not seen happen yet), then it should fall into the second slot.

Assembly is fairly intuitive, just look at the picture and you'll figure it out. I've made minor adjustments to the functional parts so that they are easier to put in place.

You will also notice that there are slits in the tubes that hold the coins, each bar going across the slits is the location of every 10th coin, so not only does this machine sort, but it also helps you count! To remove the coins you will have to remove the hopper.

Version 2 improvement:

I didn't like how it difficult it was to remove the hopper to get out the coins once sorted, so I came up up with a simpler solution to removing the tubes that doesn't require disassembly.  Now, the base of the model is printed in two parts and are threaded, so you simply need to unscrew the bottom of the base to get the tubes out.  Then when you are ready, insert the tubes back into the top part and screw back on the bottom part.  This is a huge quality of life improvement over the original model!

IMPORTANT: Only turn the crank counter-clockwise! This will allow the coins to fall into the correct slot. If you turn the crank clockwise, everything will fall into the quarter tube. Also, keep in mind that the tubes need to be arranged from smallest to largest in a counter-clockwise fashion, so dimes, pennies, nickels, and last quarter.

I've included two files, one for the A1 Mini (4 plates), and one for the A1 / P1 / X1 (3 plates). I opted for red, white, and blue so it looks a bit like an American flag, but of course you can make it any color you want. You can also move individual parts around onto different plates if you want to use more than 3 colors.

I hope you enjoy this, my kids are pretty excited about it!

I had a great experience with this coin sorter model! The printing process was a breeze with the provided print profile – everything printed smoothly and without any issues. Assembly was intuitive and quick, and I really appreciated how easy it was to put together. One of the standout features for me is the design incorporating the doubled-up coin holders. This not only allows for more coins to be sorted at once but also provides redundancy, ensuring that coins are sorted correctly. It's a small touch, but it adds a lot to the overall functionality of the sorter. The only minor issue I encountered was with the hopper. When loading many coins at once, they tend to stack up vertically in the port, preventing them from falling flat into the sorter. It would be great if a small neck could be added to the hopper to help guide the coins into the right orientation. Overall, I absolutely love this model! It's been a huge help in sorting the abundance of coins I seem to have lying around. Thanks for creating such a practical and thoughtful design – I’ll definitely be using it often!

Really glad you like it. I agree with you on that part about adding a neck to the hopper as I encounter the same issue. That is something that I inherited from the original design and I'm really not sure how to go about improving it, but that doesn't mean that I won't try to someday. Thanks for the boost!

if you made the big gear thinner it might work better

I actually tried several different versions of the big gear, but this one worked the best.

I know, my son was going nuts that they were all European! He insisted that I spend the whole night working on it so that we could have an American one. By the way, I just uploaded a new and improved version 2 that allows you to unscrew the bottom for easy access to the coins. If you already printed the original, you only need to reprint the large red piece and the bottom of it with the threaded cylinder. And thanks for the boost!

Other Issues:Design doesn't work. Pennies always cause it to clog up under the main gear. It will not take more than one coin at a time fed into the hopper. Had to reprint the handle because it broke off with the infill @ 15%. This needs to be redesigned unfortunately.

Sorry you had problems. I've never had issues with pennies, typically its dimes that can cause a problem and come out on top of other coins. Sadly there really isn't a workaround for that as dimes are much thinner than other coins and I need it to be sufficiently thick to accommodate all of them. The hopper can get clogged from time to time, but I usually just shake it a bit and that solves the problem.

from the picture I can tell that the large gear plate is installed upside down. I had these same issues until i flipped it so that the recessed portion on the other side gives the coins something to fall into. still not a perfect print, but it did make a significant difference.

one thing I would look at is making the tolerances smaller and testing different designs of the funnel because when it turns it can either get stuck sometimes or the coins get into a position where you have to take out a lot so it would work, I also have had dimes go in other slots because they get ontop of coins or Pennie’s getting stuck on the middle of the gear which then would fall into the last coin slot

Works great! A little bit gritty and gets stuck with the pennies and dimes sometimes but thats just because they are super small and the same size, could you possibly make it so that it fits gold dollar coins, silver dollar coins, and 50 cent coins? and those types of collectibles?

Also I do not know how to give a 5 star because I am new, but this is definitely a 5 star.

I think the model is great, but the tubes are the incorrect size for wrapping coins. I went ahead and modified your model to include a black stripe where the cutoff should be.

Printed perfectly but like other users have mentioned, dimes will get stuck on top of other coins and fall into the wrong slot.

Printed great! I had a few issues with the knob tabs breaking when connecting it with the crank handle.Im a novice printer but seems to be an issue with layer adhesion. not sure if that’s my problem or not. Changed the crank a little to elevate it off the spinning gear so that it’s easier to crank. I also added threads to the crank connection with the gear just for fun! It works well but I’m not a huge fan of how the coin tubes fall out when they have coins in them when you open the bottom.

Yeah, you gotta be careful that the tubes don't fall. However, the original design where you have to disassemble the entire thing is a pain, this was the best solution that I could think of. Thanks sharing your modifications and the boost!
