Description

This is a 3D XYZ axis set intended for visualising 3D rotations/translations for mathematics and engineering. The axes use the conventional red, green and blue colours to represent the X, Y and Z axes respectively.

Notes

The axes are designed to be slim for an elegant look and so that two could be printed and closely nest together to represent two frames with the same location. Therefore they are printed as separate pieces to improve the strength of the Z axis. The central glue joint is a weak point; it should survive a drop, but could be easily broken with a some force.

Printing

The print profile uses “by object” print sequence, intended to be used with an AMS. But with some simple changes it could be printed without an AMS.

Assembly

To assemble the axes, some glue is needed (I used CA gel with an accelerator). Better to use a bit too much than not enough, it's easy to shave off the excess. A gluing jig is included to help align the axes and avoid getting glue on your surface.

  1. Place the X (red) and Y (green) axes on the bottom of the jig in the positions shown below. Ensure they are oriented correctly so that the 45 degree surfaces meet at the centre and the other 45 degree surfaces face up to meet the Z (blue) axis. Slide both axes back a little to apply glue to one of them and then slide them both until they meet neatly at the centre. Ensure the axes are always pressed firmly into their respective corners so they can't rotate in any direction after orienting them.
  2. With the X and Y axes attached and still in the jig, hold the Z axis (blue) in the position shown below, ensuring it is oriented correctly and pressed firmly in the corner. Apply glue and slide it down until it neatly meets with the X and Y axes.
