Description

The compliant mechanism was designed by the BYU CMR (Compliant Mechanism Research group). It was designed with the purpose of pointing thrusters, antennas, and other aerospace equipment for NASA. To my understanding, a complaint mechanism like this is preferred over a traditional 2 DOF (Degree Of Freedom) system because there are less parts to break in space where it is unrepairable. You can find example videos of the mechanism on the BYU CMR YouTube Channel.

Since the mechanism was designed by the BYU CMR, I am unable to add the file with the rest of the game. Unfortunately, the file is not yet on MakerWorld, so you can find it on other websites by searching 2 DOF Fully Compliant Space Pointing Mechanism. Then, download the version of the mechanism called pointer_mech_for3dprinting_thick. Next, scale the mechanism so that the largest side is 50 mm. I only used supports where the two turning parts overhang. I used regular PLA. It may take a few attempts to get right, but it is worth it. Once it is printed, be very gentle with the mechanism due to the thin flexures.

For assembly, just look at the pictures above. I will eventually add a video to my channel with an in depth assembly process, so if you have any questions for now, feel free to comment. I used super glue to attach the mechanism to the base, the knob to the mechanism, and the connector to the maze. Hot glue will also work fine. The only non-printed item you need is a tiny metal ball. These can be found in ball bearings or you can buy some on the Maker Supply. I have attached the product below.

When putting the maze with the connector piece onto the mechanism, put your finger through the base to stabilize the mechanism connecting piece.

Thank you so much for reading along and downloading the models! I plan on adding more maze designs so stay tuned for that.
